3 Step Snare is a system I’ve crafted over the years in attempt to most thoroughly & concisely educate my snare students. The main difference, I think, in my approach vs. other snare teachers (that my students seem to enjoy) is the level of pre-emptively striking behind it instead of (the teacher) “calling it how they see it.” I think going into anything, you just gotta have a plan, man.
For example, instead of training you halfway, robbing you of many essential concepts - then you subsequently get blind-sided by some unfamiliar material out from the real world - then later come to me after either getting cut or otherwise humbled, & only THEN can I help you with what got you wrecked from, after the fact… I bring to YOU what I absolutely 100% know you’ll encounter out there, so that when you leave the nest and go to auditions, you’ve either already seen the material and have it playable, or you can figure it out quickly because of all of the variations we’ve explored. I make sure to stay on top of the culture’s vocab (even push it a bit, I’ve always enjoyed this as a player myself) so that chances are, you’re better trained than most if you’ve trained with me. What I teach is not limited to everything here but does absolutely include it.
Fun fact, the initial motivation behind compiling a more robust pedagogy was because of a phenomenon I witnessed in people teaching me as a high schooler that I really wanted to avoid, which was a new teacher telling one round of students something they realized off the cuff and then never telling anyone else that nugget again, cuz they can never realize it for the first time again. This would result in them basically being super helpful in their outset then hitting a steep dropoff. Having lucked out and been apart of a decent high school drumline, I knew beforehand that when I started teaching I wanted to be able to replicate my student’s training, same skill level, different person. So, as a young snare student hoping to make a career out of teaching private lessons when I got older, I documented pretty much everything everyone taught me along the way, filtered out the bad, kept the good, then took all the good I was left with and refined that, and here we have 3 Step Snare - what I think is - the most comprehensive system out there. Ordered by easy, medium, and hard to keep you in flow state for as much % of the time as possible. You can tell I’m very pleased with myself lol, this took SO much work :D
Combined with personalized consult especially on your technique, this system is my lifeblood when I teach lessons. It starts with a memory game, (vocab) which you can get a jump on by perusing through the rudiments and learning them, especially if you plan on taking lessons with me. Super easy. Theory is next, which involves not only memorization of formulas and recalling that memory but also formulaic problem solving, a well as having to use more mental bandwidth to parse information in real time - but it will get easier once you’ve been around the block. Starts kinda difficult, gets easier once you get the hang of it. Last is your technique, which gets complicated because not only do we need to train the hands & have the muscles know what to do and be able to do it, we also need to combine what we learn from steps 1 and 2 all at once. Step 1 will be deeply embedded because of its ease of use, not really worried about that, but step 2 will need a more active role mentally, and step 3 will do its part on the physical side of things. The nuance behind this is the concept of active training for passive benefits, which we’ll get to in step 3.
Realistically, all of these concepts need to be hit in our lessons eventually, but timelines for auditions / how many lessons you plan on taking usually take precedent over just strictly following this system. Plan ahead to get the best results from your time with me, make the $ you spend worth it. Obviously, those that see the course through and allow ample time before auditions will get the best results. Mileage may vary if you take a lesson one single time a week before auditions, or expect to become a snare god from one 25 minute lesson. Not happening. Yes, I absolutely can train you but it takes 2 to tango. I know I’ve talked a big game and I show off the work I’ve done (it is kinda my life’s work) but legit, taking lessons with me only enables the option of taking the fast track - if you also do your part. You’re gonna become a monster in your practice time, not in the time spent with me in a discord call. I’d honestly recommend holding off on booking any lessons after your first one if you haven’t worked on anything since our last one. After a lesson, ball is in your court, only book again when you know you’ll bring questions to me and have some level of familiarity with the material I assign you to improve on, then the ball is in my court and we can ping pong with that type of flow. That’s how you’re gonna get the most out of training with me. I do this for the money 100% don’t even get it twisted but I also have a serious intensity in my love for the game. We’re both gonna be at our best if you put your best foot forward during our training period. There’s no question that I will too, is what I’m trying to communicate on this page. Lastly, if you want to take lessons with me, learn the packet if you can and get a jump on learning these rudiments.
